The aftermath of the hellish 20 mile last Sunday wasn’t as bad as it should have been. Yoga Monday night helped immensely, for sure, and my run on Tuesday wasn’t too bad. Yes, I felt soreness in my quads, Achilles, and foot, but it wasn’t debilitating. It was just…there.

My sleeping seems to be back on track, which is awesome! However, I felt so run down all week. I felt like I was trying really, really hard to fight off being sick. After my run Tuesday, all my runs were a struggle and I had a horrible stomach ache. 😦 This was NO time to get sick! I have been training since January, and working my bootie off, I couldn’t get sick now! NOOOOOOO!

My run Thursday night was the worst. It was an 8 mile run, and although it was beautiful and 70 when I ran, I felt so weak. I thought for sure I was sick. I felt better once I hydrated and got home, and when I woke up at 5AM Friday for yoga? I felt fine. Tired, but not sick. PHEW!!!! I got more and more exhausted as the day went on, and was SO glad it was the weekend so I could catch up on sleep. The past nearly five months of training hard were definitely catching up to me. Sleeeeeeeeeeeep.

I had a great 4 mile run Saturday! I woke up smiling and happy and felt strong and healthy for my run! I also had a light 60 minute massage after. I was hoping to have a massage AFTER my long run Sunday, but the scheduling didn’t work out.

12 mile run Sunday. It went pretty well. Actually, it went really well! No pain and nothing major to complain about. 🙂

My Achilles/foot hurts quite a bit right now. I have giant knots in the bottom of my foot. I could use a 60 minute massage just on my feet!! 🙂

I leave for Cali on Saturday, and I am so, so, so excited for a vacation. I go down a week before the race to relax, and also to get acclimated to the warmer weather. I do have one more 12 mile run before the race.

Wow, less than 2 weeks to go until I run 26.2 miles. I can’t believe it! I am actually going to do this! It makes me happy thinking about it. 🙂

That hurt

Owieeeeeeeeee. Another 20 miles Sunday, and it was rough. 😦 Going into the weekend, I didn’t like the way the weather was looking for both Saturday and Sunday, Sunday being much worse: 50’s and rain. My body was not in tip-top shape either. I was still sore from my last 20 miler two weeks prior, and Tuesday, I had trouble falling asleep. NOOOOOO! I have been sleeping so well…not long enough, but I was crashing out at night. I was not going to let my sleep get out of control again. I tried to get in for an acupuncture appointment immediately (I was not successful), so I went and got some Reiki instead. One reiki session=good nights’ sleep. I have slept well since. YAY! I went to acupuncture this morning, too. I am trying with a new person. I wasn’t a fan of the process (the needles are uncomfortable), but I really think it was helping with my sleep and with my soreness (two things I had her focus on). I have worked WAY too hard training for this race to have my body fall apart the last three weeks.

So, I was a bit nervous going into my last really long run. I spent all day Saturday running errands for my long run/race day. I wanted to make sure I was running in the outfit I was going to run the race in, and I desperately needed new shoes. The shoes I bought three months ago were shot! And, I was running in a shoe that was 1/2 size too small, hence my black toe nail. I got some more electrolyte fruit snacks to eat during my long run (I don’t like the GU stuff), and some Body Glide to prevent chafing (I have never chafed, but just in case). Saturday was a beautiful day to be running errands, and I hoped that the next day would be a nice weather surprise, too. Late in the afternoon, I was told by a woman at one of the running stores I went to: “Tomorrow’s weather is going to be BAD. Why don’t you run today instead? That’s what I would do. Those training programs are not carved in stone.” It was 3PM. I had not even thought of this. I had not prepared to run on Saturday. I felt like an idiot. It made much more sense, since I had a birthday party to go to Sunday afternoon. Early on in my training, I had switched some training days, but with only three weeks to go until race day, I didn’t even think about switching up the days. Oy. It would have been a good idea. I was pretty bummed out about not thinking about it, ESPECIALLY when I woke up Sunday morning to steady rain. Yuck.

I woke up tired and grumpy, but tried to think positively: I wouldn’t overheat. I wouldn’t sunburn. I really didn’t mind running in the rain that much. I would feel so good after it was done.

I had a busy day, so I had no time to dink around. After a quick bowl of oatmeal, I was out the door wearing: my new shoes, a hat, my running dress (with a pair of sport boy shorts underneath…this was what I wanted to make sure didn’t chafe), a long sleeve dri-fit top over, and my water bottle with electrolyte fruit snacks in the pocket.

I warmed up quickly, and 2 /2 miles in, I was sweating and uncomfortably warm already. I decided to strip off the long sleeve shirt and leave it at my friend’s whose house was on my route. I was happy with my decision until, 4 miles later, the wind REALLY picked up. So, it was pouring, and blowing sideways, and with all the water on my skin, it was COLD. Yikes. 14 more miles of this? I was starting to break down mentally. I was not having fun at all. Then I snapped myself out of it…I had to! I told myself I could do this…that it was a piece of cake. I had this battle probably a half dozen more times before I finished the 20 miles. The last five miles were the worst. I was a mess. I hurt. I was sopping wet. I was hungry (which was really weird), and I was tired of running. So many times I just wanted to give up, but I didn’t…I kept going, talking (out loud) to myself and growling the rest of the way. I thought of the massage I had scheduled for later that afternoon, and how good that was going to feel. This thought helped me stay focused on finishing. People drove by and gawked (I was running in the pouring, cold, rain in a dress), and I smiled and waved, with a pained look on my face, I am sure, to passers-by bundled up in their hats, gloves, rain gear and holding umbrellas.  Most of them smiled back, but there were a few who just stared in amazement? Disbelief? Pity? Who knows, but I am sure they were glad they were not doing what I was doing at that moment. But, I finished, in around an 8:30 mile. It hurt to stop! AND, NO chafing at all!!! YAY.

I couldn’t get to the bagel store fast enough. I was so, so hungry, sopping wet, and freezing cold. I had a one year old’s birthday party to get to, so after I got my scrambagel, I rushed home, ran the bath, filled it with Epsom Salt, and got it. I ate my bagel in the bath. It took me a while to warm up, and when I did, it felt so, so good. My feet were a mess from running in soaked socks. Luckily no blisters!

I could have stayed in the bath much longer, but had to head south to the party. I stayed long enough to say hi to the birthday boy, visit a bit, see him open his present, and eat three pieces of cake (felt so gross after that), before I had to head to my massage. I was SOOOOOOO looking forward to my massage. My poor body was hurting.

My massage hurt, too. But a hurt so good, I know I need it kind of hurt. I had knots I didn’t even know I had. My bad for not getting a massage after my last 20 miler. My biggest problem right now is Achilles pain, which is spreading down into my foot. It HURTS! I was walking with a limp, and it still hurts now. 😦

Yoga last night helped loosen the last bit of tightness, and I was actually walking without a limp last night! YAY!!

Acupuncture this morning with an amazing acupuncturist! I felt REALLY good when she was done with me. And, she sent me home with some herbs (for anxiety) and special tea (for sleeping) that looks like sticks and bark. I am going to see her again next week before I leave for Cali.

I have a 6 mile run tonight. It’s BEAUTIFUL outside.

Hey, if I can run 20 miles in the crap weather I ran in Sunday, I really can do anything. The race…in San Diego…in the warm sunshine is going to be so refreshing after running in the freezing cold wet mess I ran in Sunday. Aaaaaah sunshine!! 🙂

Less than 4 weeks to go!

Race day is 4 weeks from yesterday!! Wow.

My quads hurt pretty much the entire week. I don’t think it was necessarily all from my run, either. They were sore going into my 20 miler, I think from yoga. I am sure the run aggravated them, but the long run is not the primary cause of the soreness. I have never had quad problems/soreness, but man-oh-man, they were sore this week. After my 20 mile run last Sunday, I rested Monday (went to yoga and tried to take it easy), and started right back up Tuesday with 4 x 1 mile sprints. It actually wasn’t too bad. I ran around 7 minute miles. I didn’t want to push myself too hard because I had a 7 mile run Wednesday, and then Thursday, Cinco de Mayo, I ran 10 miles. I ran 3 laps around Greenlake. I ran while everyone boozed in the beer garden at Tacos Guaymas. I was a tad bit envious, yes, but I knew I would feel MUCH better the next morning, so I ran and ran and ran. I didn’t prepare for this long run, and got REALLY hungry around mile 8. When I finished the run, I couldn’t get to my car fast enough to go get something to eat: fish tacos. I NEVER get hungry like that when I run. I was famished. I then got up bright and early (5AM) Friday morning to go to yoga. I went to yoga in the morning  because girls night was in the evening. Everyone ended up cancelling last minute, however. I was sad.

The weekend was busy, busy, busy. Birthday preparation and party and Mother’s Day and running. AND the best part of the weekend??? A surprise visit from my lovely little sister. It was SOOOOOOO good to see her. 🙂

My 10 mile run yesterday was amazing. I basically sprinted the entire time. I felt really, really, really good. I think it had something to do with all the food I ate at brunch and the previous night at the birthday dinner. I really run better when I am fully fueled up.

So, less than 4 weeks to go until the race. One more LONG 20 miler this Sunday before I start tapering. I am getting very excited!! And a little nervous, too, but I think I will be just fine. 🙂

And that…was 20 miles.

And THAT was 20 miles. Wow. 2:51.00 of running (I stopped once at a drinking fountain to fill up my water bottle). It went pretty well. Not as well as my 18 miler, but well for 20 miles. My quads were a little sore going into the run (from yoga Friday, I believe), and my legs started to get quite fatigued around mile 10. Not painful, just tired. My music died with 2 1/2 miles to go, and that last mile seemed to drag…on…forever. But, I did it, and I don’t need a wheel chair today. But, I sure do feel it today. My legs are tired, and I have mild IT band pain in my left knee. Also, I am tired…really, really tired. I should have gone to sleep MUCH earlier. Oh well.

Luckily it was a beautiful day. I dressed perfectly. I wasn’t too hot and none of my clothing bothered me. Unfortunately, however, I forgot about sunscreen, and got VERY burned. 😦 I have  some awesome (no, not) sports bra and arm band (for my ipod) tan/burn lines. Yikes.

I went straight to the bagel shop after my run to get an egg bagel. This has been my ritual after every long run for this round of training. It’s called a “Scrambagel.” I get it on a salt bagel (to replenish all the salt lost from sweating), with jack cheese, chives, and salt and pepper. It is DELICIOUS!!! It hits the spot after the run. I get it to go, and sit in my warm car in the sun and eat. I am too hungry to wait until I get home, and the warmth of the car feels really good as my body cools down after the run.

Then, home I went and into an Epsom salt bath where I soaked for…not long enough, but I wanted to get out and enjoy the sun some more, and also do some socializing! So, I headed over to my friend’s who lives on Beach Drive. She has a fantastic view, and a fabulous porch to sit on to watch said view. It is a great people-watching venue, and for some reason, the location of her house/porch is hotter than any other spot on the street. We were sweating!

After baking in the sun all day, I went to do my red light therapy. 🙂

After all this I was really tired, and VERY hungry! But, I had a lawn to cut. A VERY long lawn, and since it was supposed to rain the next day, I had to tackle it. It wasn’t fun. It wasn’t fun at all. It took me a long, long time, and my legs were so tired. But, I finished, and feel so much better about the condition of my yard now. 🙂

I start week 16 of training this week. I am supposed to run again tomorrow? Ouch. 😦 Hopefully yoga tonight will help loosen everything up a bit.

Oh, and the distraction I mentioned last post. GONE! This train is getting back on track!!
